Particularly in area 2, 4 out of 5 schools are reaching high suspensions rates: Hilltop Middle, Rancho del Rey Middle, Bonita Vista Middle, and Bonita Vista High. The goal of reducing suspension rates is to create a more supportive and equitable education environment by addressing the root causes of behavior issues and promoting positive, constructive alternatives to exclusionary discipline, In addition to high suspension rates, we fall short in academics as we are below standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics, according to California School Dashboard.

Advocate for Student Rights and Equality

As a dedicated mother and an advocate for students' rights, Angelica Martinez is fighting to protect her son from discrimination and mistreatment at Hilltop Middle School. In 2023, her son, a student with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), faced inequity due to his abilities. He endured two separate assaults by teachers in September and December, yet the school has taken no accountability for these actions.

In one particularly disturbing incident, a teacher physically assaulted her son by slapping him on the back, an event captured on the school's surveillance system. Despite the clear evidence, the school has denied Angelica's requests to view the footage, prompting her to involve the Department of FERPA in an effort to obtain the video and prove the assault.

Her son was also unjustly suspended for behaviors directly related to his IEP, a decision that violates his rights and disregards the support he should be receiving. Adding to the trauma, he was publicly shamed by a science teacher who lacked proper credentials and was later removed from his home school under false allegations in January 2024. These actions, which appear to be retaliatory, have deeply affected Angelica’s son and highlight the need for systemic change.

After Angelica bravely went public with these issues, the principal of Hilltop Middle was moved to another school. However, other administrators who collaborated in covering up the incidents remain in their positions, and the district has failed to address the ongoing problems.

Angelica’s experience has only strengthened her resolve to advocate for students with special needs and fight against discrimination within the school system. She is determined to hold the district accountable and ensure that no other child suffers the same injustices. Her battle is not just for her son but for all students who deserve a safe and supportive educational environment.
